{personal note saw him at possibly the smallest venue i’ve even seen him play, this past year. whats gives when mediocre copycats of his style headline festivals and he is back to playing tiny venues. granted i loved the intimate setting but it seemed as if he was forced into intimate and giving it just enough to get paid for performance, instead of a conscious choice to be in arms length of crowd. just two cents i could keep going, leave a comment and i will.}

Once upon a time, being a “diehard fan” meant buying a band’s album, show ticket, T-shirt, limited edition signed LP — anything your earnings would allow. Today the term can have a very different meaning. You can be a “diehard” by blogging about everything the band puts out, posting links to your Facebook wall, re-Tweeting the band’s messages, and commenting on its Soundcloud page, all without paying a dime.

Nonprofit arts groups tend to spend much of their time scrounging for grants and praying for corporate largesse. But one art foundation taking shape on 120 acres in the high oak chaparral of Sonoma County has different kinds of worries these days: spider mites, bud rot and the occasional low-flying surveillance visit from the local Sheriff’s Office.

MARS

originally created as an energy source in remote areas (ie The Arctic). Like conventional wind turbines, MARS uses magnetic induction to produce energy, but the difference comes with increased altitude. Catching wind 800 feet higher than its traditional counterparts, there’s much less resistance and greater wind speed, ultimately allowing the MARS access to a superior crop of wind. Another advantage, the turbine can produce energy in winds as low as seven mph and as high as 63 mph whereas contemporary turbines shut down around 35 mph and with little or no wind, they become useless.

Finally, SEPTA isn’t shitting the bed…

Vehicles without regenerative braking are throwing away a lot of energy every time they brake (movement is converted into heat via friction on the brake pads). Hybrid and electric car address that problem by capturing as much of that energy as possible and converting it into electricity, and the same might be about to happen to subway trains with the added twist that it would be tied to the (smart) power grid. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is experimenting with regen braking, a move that it estimates could slash its electricity bills by “up to 40 percent and generate millions of dollars a year.
